How to Do a Fire Safety Audit

The audit follows a fixed sequence, whether the building is a warehouse, a mine surface workshop or a multi-tenant office block:
  1. Confirm occupancy and fire load against the standard, checked against how the building is actually being used today — not how it was designed.
  2. Survey ignition sources, including the electrical installation, hot work areas and process heat.
  3. Walk the means of escape — route widths, travel distances, door hardware, emergency lighting and signage against the occupancy load.
  4. Test containment — fire wall and fire door integrity, penetration sealing, and roof or ceiling void barriers.
  5. Inspect detection, alarm and suppression systems, and check them against current servicing certificates.
  6. Produce a clause-referenced, risk-ranked gap register — the document a municipal fire officer and an insurer both recognise.
